Catering to Form
Structural changes, such as removing walls to move
kitchens closer to gathering rooms, as well as
adding islands, fireplaces, and audio-video
equipment are among the trends that Jim McCoy,
president of The Kitchen Guild, is seeing.
During one recent kitchen redesign at the Northwest,
DC, home of the Garcia family, McCoy and designer
Cheryl Parsons worked with the owners to blend the
requirements of family, function, and ambiance.
The Garcias love to cook, so much of the workspace
and professional appliances were selected based on
their requests." Parsons says, including a 48-inch
Thermador gas range, a 42-inch Thermador
refrigerator, a Bosch dishwasher, and a Viking
beverage refrigerator for ease of use for the
couple's twins.
Mixing cabinetry finishes, such as dark cherry
Wood-Mode cabinets for the perimeter and distressed
black cabinets for the island and around the
fireplace, provide Old World charm in a new setting.
The kitchen's five-piece crown molding installed by
The Kitchen Guild's lead carpenter, Barry Foley,
emphasizes the gourmet space's elegant feel. Blend
in the ambiance of a fireplace and the kitchen
becomes the heart of this home.
